Can you give me some basic information on the medication Metformin? A. Metformin is an oral medication that helps to lower blood glucose (blood sugar).  It does this by lowering the amount of glucose your liver produces, reducing the amount of sugar you absorb from the food you eat, and improving your body's sensitivity to insulin. Metformin can be used solely or in combination of other diabetes medications along with diet and exercise to treat diabetes.  Metformin is not used to treat type 1 diabetes.  The main side effect of metformin is GI related (diarrhea and/or cramping) but is not common with long-term use. I would suggest talking with your doctor and/or pharmacist to learn more about metformin.
